Welcome! A few years ago, I discovered an application that artists employ in their works to bring cultural awareness to their audiences. Having discerned this semiotic theory that applies to literature, music, art, film, and the media, I have devoted the blog, "Theory of Iconic Realism" to explore this theory. The link to the publisher of my book is below. If you or your university would like a copy of this book for your library or if you would like to review it for a scholarly journal, please contact the Edwin Mellen Press at the link listed below. Looking forward to hearing from you!

United Airlines Flight 93 Memorial and Iconic Realism

Artists' rendition of completed memorial,
Crescent of Embrace by Paul and Milena Murdoch

In a field southeast of Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, just outside the town of Shanksville, United Airlines Flight 93 crashed on 9/11/01. Those passengers and flight attendants on board this flight bravely overtook the terrorists who killed the pilots and attempted to turn another passenger airline into a human bomb, most likely aimed at the Capitol Building in Washington, D.C. As a result of the bravery and cunning collaboration of the passengers, the plane crashed in this Pennsylvania field instead, killing all on board, thus transforming this field into sacred ground.

The manner this memorial displays iconic realism is that here we will eventually see a wall, an artistic rendering in the form of a marble crescent, located in the middle of an isolated field of wildflowers. The purpose of this artistic design is to honor those heros who lost their lives and to bring awareness of the significance of heroism within a culture implemented to save the lives of the innocent.
